SPRED-R shotshellsThe High Performance SPRED-R Shotgun Ammo revolutionize shotgun shells pattern effectiveness by producing a quick, uniform opening of the pattern without adversely affecting pellet energy or the downrange pellet count. SPRED-R loads can be used with any choke from full to skeet, and depending on the choke used, provide the shooter from 80% to 150% more pattern area at 15 yards than conventional shotshells fired through the same choke. Polywad SPRED-R Shotshells are available in 12 gauge 2-3/4", 12 gauge 2-1/2", 16 gauge, 20 gauge and 28 gauge.

Polymag ShotshellsPolymag shotshells are available in 12 gauge 2-3/4". The Polymag 60X is a unique shell with 1-1/2 oz. of the finest nickel plated Italian lead shot, possibly the very best load available for Pheasant hunting. (NOTE: Don’t take our word for it. Check out the quotes from famous gun/ammo writers regarding the Polymag on the left side of this page.) Also, the Polymag 60X has the lowest recoil for such a large payload - only 8400 PSI! It also makes a great Turkey load. Our other Polymag product, the 30X shells, are fantastic for the smaller upland birds such as Grouse, Quail, Woodcock and Chukar.

Quik-Shok 12 Gauge Sabot Shotgun Slug graphicFor large game, such as deer, the Quik-Shok 12 Gauge Sabot Shotgun Slugs are a one shot stopper! The patented slug weighs 1-1/8 oz. and splits into three massive segments after penetrating liquid or tissue, delivering devastating stopping power unmatched by any other shotgun slug! One of the more important Quik-Shok advantages gained by big game hunters is the rapid energy transfer, which is diffused over a large area within the target. Quik-Shok 12 Gauge Sabot Slug packagingQuik-Shok slugs are loaded to 1,500 fps but have reduced felt recoil for the shooter. This high performance 12 ga. 2-3/4" sabot slug has excellent accuracy out of smooth bore shotguns.

SPRED-R reloading supplies graphicShotgun Reloading Supplies based on Polywad SPRED-R technology are available for handloading. These Spred-R inserts are plastic wads that resembles a thumbtack, with a round disk top and a post. It is loaded in the top of a shotshell after the shot is dropped, just prior to crimping. This little insert allows handloaders to achieve the same great patterns as our manufactured Spread-R shotshells. Polywad offers four different inserts - 12 gauge solid, 12 gauge 3-hole, 16 gauge, and 20/28 gauge.
Vintager Shotshells graphicVintager ShotShells are made especially for older guns. These low recoil, low pressure, NON Spred-R loads come in a 2-1/2" or 2" shell that can be used in any length chamber. The Vintager provides the softest feel to your shoulder, is easy on your gun and gives tight shooting out of choked bores. Available in 12, 16, and 20 gauge, these shells are bulk packed in case lots of 250 shells. Doublewide Shotshells GraphicDoublewide ShotShells have Vintager pressure and payload combined with the Spred-R dispersion. Doublewides produce a pattern two to three times larger than the Vintager. This shell is available in 2-1/2" or 2" and 12, 16, and 20 gauge, and is bulk packed in case lots of 250 shells. Available in #8 shot ONLY.

Polywad Celebrates Two Decades Of Excellent Reviews!
This not a complete list. Also, additional articles will be forthcoming.

TITLE:“Fringe Benefits”
AUTHOR:Dave Holmes
FROM:Shotgun Sports
DATE:November 1997. Pages 52-58.
EXCERPT:“The PolyMag is a pheasant guide’s delight and a hunter’s best friend. I’ll probably guide 60 to 90 hunting parties this year. If I could choose but one shell for them to carry, this would be it. If you are a hunter who cares enough to send the very best downrange, contact Polywad and find out where to get your hands on some of these loads. You won’t be sorry.”

TITLE:“Future Ammo”
AUTHOR:Edward A. Matunas
FROM:Sporting Clays
DATE:April 1998. Page 54.
EXCERPT:“Testing of the 60X loads I received suggested that this might be the ideal first shell to be loaded in a single-barrel shotgun when pheasant hunting.

TITLE:“Polywad Performance”
AUTHOR:Tom Roster
FROM:Sporting Clays
DATE:January 1999. Pages 20-21.
EXCERPT:I have used both the 30-x and 60-x Polymag loads for ruffed grouse and pheasant hunting, respectively. The 30-x load showed excellent knock-down power at 15-25 yards on grouse, and the 60-x loads proved lethal on pheasants from 35-50 yards.

TITLE:“A New Idea for Scatterloads”
AUTHOR:Wallace Labisky
FROM:Handloader. The Journal of Ammunition Reloading.
DATE:May-June 1986. Number 121. Pages 20-21, 51-52.
EXCERPT:“My first session at the pattern board convinced me that the Spred-R is every bit as effective as the manufacture claims.”
NOTE:Written in '86, this was the first profession journal review of Polywad’s products.

TITLE:“The Spreader Load”
AUTHOR:Layne Simpson
FROM:Gun Dog. The Magazine of Upland Bird and Waterfowl Dogs.
DATE:October/November 2005. Pages 40-43
EXCERPT:“No doubt the results from my tests would sound more believable if the average pattern diameter increase had not been exactly the same for both guns, but that’s exactly how it turned out.”
I also found it interesting that the Spreader loads increased pattern size as much in the gun with almost no choke as they did in the tight-choked gun.”

TITLE:“Fringe Benefits”
AUTHOR:Dave Holmes
FROM:Shotgun Sports
DATE:November 1997. Pages 52-58.
EXCERPT:“Best is the name of the Polywad game. The bottom line is improved patterns, improved penetration and improved performance.”
“...Jay Menefee... His guiding philosophy is always what works best. Good enough just doesn’t cut it.”

TITLE:“Changing Chokes by Changing Shells”
AUTHOR:Les Greevy
FROM:Shooting Sportsman
DATE:March/April 1998. Page 21-24.
EXCERPT:“The real solution comes from Jay Menefee, of Polywad, and his Spred-R cartridges.”

TITLE:“Quik-Shok Sabot Slugs: Penetrating Projectile Times Three”
AUTHOR:Dave Holmes
FROM:Shotgun Sports
DATE:December 1998. Pages 24-29, 86
EXCERPT:“The slugs were used with excellent results by a few hunters I know last year and performed like they were supposed to, dropping deer in their tracks.”
The shots were all taken at moving targets, just seconds apart, at varying distances and required holds over and under, yet the Quik-Shoks were right on the money every time!.”

TITLE:“Future Ammo”
AUTHOR:Edward A. Matunas
FROM:Sporting Clays
DATE:April 1998. Page 54.
EXCERPT:“The overall approach results in near ideal patterns, with all pellets dispersed evenly.”

TITLE:“Covering the Spred”
AUTHOR:John Brindle
FROM:Shooting Sportsman
DATE:January/February 1996. Pages 18-20
EXCERPT:“What is needed is a spreader device that can be relied on to perform predictably, giving suitable patterns that vary little from shot to shot, with the pattern center falling where the gun is pointed. In the Polywad Spred-R, we have exactly that.”
...three things were immediately apparent. One is that the spreaders do spread the patterns. The second is that the pattern center is exactly where it is with ordinary shells in the same gun. The third is that the shot-to-shot variation in terms of pellet count is no different than with ordinary shells.”
Full marks for a worthwhile development and something I will not be without from now on.”

TITLE:“Spreader Loads”
AUTHOR:Ron Forsyth
FROM:Australian Shooter’s Journal
DATE:February 1990. Pages 35-37
EXCERPT:“When I got my hand on this device [the Spred-R] to test it, I was frankly amazed at the efficiency of it.”
Over the years, many manufacturers have tackled the problem of making good spreaders. I think that this one is that rarity in shotgunning, a genuine first, and as the producer of such, the maker is to be congratulated.”

TITLE:“Polywad Performance”
AUTHOR:Tom Roster
FROM:Sporting Clays
DATE:January 1999. Pages 20-21.
EXCERPT:“My pattern tests of Polywad’s Spred-R ammunition have always shown very even pattern dispersion.”
...covers the need of the very close-range clay target and upland game bird shooter...”

TITLE:“New Self Defense Ammo: QUIK-SHOK”
AUTHOR:Evan Marshall
FROM:American Guardian
DATE:April 1998. 28-31, 60
EXCERPT:“...testing shows that the Quik-Shok is a very accurate slug...”
...makes the shotgun a viable single-projectile short-range gun for use in high density environments.”

TITLE:“12-Gauge Quik-Shok Sabot Slug”
AUTHOR:Cpl. Ed Sanow
FROM:Law Enforcement Technology
DATE:July 1998. Pages 64-67
EXCERPT:“Based on the performance in calibrated ordnance gelatin, the Quik-Shok may be the most effective of all 12-gauge loads in law enforcement scenarios. It should certainly exceed the effectiveness of both the 12-gauge Foster-style slug and the 12-gauge 00 Buck.”
...proved itself to be a worthy police duty load during tests conducted by the FBI.”

TITLE:“Are You Overchoked?”
AUTHOR:Craig Boddington
FROM:Peters’s Shotguns. The Sporting Gentleman’s Journal.
DATE:March 1998
EXCERPT:“...the Polywad company offers a line of 'SPREDR' factory loads that are really super. Not only do they open up a tight choke, they also pattern very evenly. For serious close-range work, like grouse or quail in timber, these shells are a super option, and a few in a separate pocket can really make a difference at sporting clays.”

TITLE:“Quantum Leaping Target Loads”
AUTHOR:Tom Roster
FROM:Sporting Clays
DATE:November 2005
EXCERPT:“The Spred-R does exactly what its name implies: provides more open patterns though any choke.”
NOTE:While the quote above regards a current item for sale on this web site, most of that article discusses another new Polywad innovation which is currently in testing and is not yet in production.

TITLE:“Opening Patterns is Easier Than Ever”
AUTHOR:Don Zutz
FROM:Handloader’s Digest
DATE:Eleventh Edition (1987). Pages 114-118.
EXCERPT:“I put Spred-Rs to the test... The pattern enveloped the bird nicely and it lay where it had fallen. Perhaps 100 paces further the same scene was replayed.”

TITLE:“Don’t Choke On The Close Ones!”
AUTHOR:Randy E. Lawrence
FROM:The Double Gun
DATE:Winter 1995. Pages 33-35.
EXCERPT:“Shotshell guru Wallace Labisky of Aberdeen, South Dakota, tried some of Menefee’s early offerings and recommended them to his readers.”
Spred-R shotshells are attracting a following among sporting clay shooters finding extra targets on their scoresheets, among wingshooters bringing home that extra bird in the bag, game taken cleanly but not mangled by too-tight swarms.”
In fact, Spred-R shells are perhaps victims of their own success, the wry irony of which is not lost on Menefee. ’Shooters use them, like them and some of these competition guys figure it’s an edge they don’t want their buddies to have,‘ laughs Menefee. ’Or they think that using spreader loads is an admission that they need some extra help.‘”

“He’s right. One shooter of my close acquaintance had a case of Spred-R shells shipped to the National Sporting Clays Championship last year in San Antonio where he used them to win his class title. Though spreader loads are perfectly legal in NSCA tournaments, he’s not breathing a word about his ammo selection to anybody!”
